Farthest from Rio de Janeiro’s centre is the West Zone, a mix of industrial and agricultural areas, with a startling social disparity among its districts. With shopping malls containing cinemas, supermarkets, chic boutiques, gourmet restaurants and coffee shops, high-rise condominiums and a replica of the Statue of Liberty, Barra mimics an affluent American city.
