The inner-city Tan Phu District was once part of Tan Binh district. It has seen a sharp increase in population in recent years, which has caused housing and schooling headaches for local officials and the new families alike. Crime and illegal residency are two of the area’s biggest problems. The area covers 11 wards: Tân Thới Hòa, Tân Sơn Nhì, Phú Trung, Hòa Thạnh, Hiệp Tân, Tây Thạnh, Sơn Kỳ, Tân Quý, Tân Thành, Phú Thọ Hòa, and Phú Thạnh.
