The historic district of Spanish Wells on the tiny island of St George’s Caye was once a stopover for Spanish galleons returning to Europe. Compared to other parts of the Bahamas, it is a predominantly white community, most of its residents being descendants of the Eleutheran Adventurers.

The economy of Spanish Wells is concentrated on fishing, especially lobster fishing. This community of well-preserved colonial-style houses has all the amenities of modern living, including shops, casinos, bars and restaurants, and luxury hotels.
