Visitors entering the east side of Humacao are immediately greeted by a beautiful monument of Indian chief Jumacao, for whom the town is named.
Humacao is home to Puerto Rico's largest resort, Palmas del Mar, which brings in much-needed tourist dollars. The 3,000 acre resort boasts two world-class golf courses, over 20 tennis courts, a riding centre, beaches and restaurants.
Another popular site is the Museo Casa Roig. Noted for its exhibits of contemporary art, the museum was previously the home of the Roig-Guzman family of sugar planters.
Those who are interested in science should check out the Astronomic Observatory. Depending upon the time of visit, one could have a peek through its powerful telescope and observe the sunspots by day and the stars and planets at night.
Another site of scientific importance is the Caribbean Primate Research Centre. Situated on an off-shore island near the town, the centre is a protected reserve for rhesus monkeys which were once used for experimentation.
