Some Londoners will soon be living the high life.
The future residents of the Shard Tower's uppermost apartments will be so high up they'll be looking down on everything, even the clouds over London. At 1,016 feet high, the Shard is the tallest skyscraper in Western Europe. Its highest residential flat will be on the 65th floor, 735 feet above the ground and several feet over the city's cloud layer, which hovers over London at around 700 feet for at least an hour for 83 days of the year.
Shaped like a pyramid and sitting by the Thames opposite the City of London, the Shard is a 72-storey mixed residential-office-hotel development designed by Renzo Piano. Its 12 apartments are on the 53rd to the 65th floors, sitting above 27 office floors and 19 hotel floors. It is scheduled to be completed by the 2012 Olympic Games.
